Summary

Terrific!Another outstanding book by Michael Connelly。 Never thought Bosch could be replaced but Renee is a close second and in some ways even better。 Can’t wait for the next book in the series。

This was an excellent read。 The plot had numerous unexpected twists, the characters were well defined and totally believable, the interactions between Renee and Bosch were in line with his established character and Renee become more likable and bosch-like as the series progresses。 Like some other reviewers, I could have done without the allusions to the whole mask disaster, but I thought the scene in which Renee's partner refused to help the homeless guy unless he put on a mask illustrative of t This was an excellent read。 The plot had numerous unexpected twists, the characters were well defined and totally believable, the interactions between Renee and Bosch were in line with his established character and Renee become more likable and bosch-like as the series progresses。 Like some other reviewers, I could have done without the allusions to the whole mask disaster, but I thought the scene in which Renee's partner refused to help the homeless guy unless he put on a mask illustrative of the misreading of priorities with our police departments。 Connelly further accurately describes the passive attitude contaminating public service。 。。。more

I love this book。 I love the Ballard & Bosch partnership。 I especially love Renee, she is tough and true; an inspiring heroine。 Not that I agree with her lifestyle or how she loves working the night shift。 I never really understand the appeal of the late night; being awake and working in such a shift when everyone else is sleeping。 I love Michael Connelly books, I’ve read them all。 Most of them were at a setting that were way before my time。 This book however is set post-pandemic。 Some of the ev I love this book。 I love the Ballard & Bosch partnership。 I especially love Renee, she is tough and true; an inspiring heroine。 Not that I agree with her lifestyle or how she loves working the night shift。 I never really understand the appeal of the late night; being awake and working in such a shift when everyone else is sleeping。 I love Michael Connelly books, I’ve read them all。 Most of them were at a setting that were way before my time。 This book however is set post-pandemic。 Some of the events are still fresh in our memories; and I like that。 Most people read for escapism, but that doesn’t make sense if they read books that are about crimes and evil criminals。 But in most cases, fiction mimics reality。 The events and emotions shapes us all, and kudos to Michael Connelly for being able to harness it and write it such that the characters are brought to life in a way that we feel them too。 That’s why this book is good。 。。。more

The dark hoursI enjoyed this book。 I have read some of his books and liked them, also。 The story kept you guessing。

Great! Wish it had more of Bosch but still really good。 Ballard and Bosch together again!

I would have given it more stars if he hadn't put so much COVID into the book。 Not everyone thinks the same way and it was a total deterrent to the story for me。 I would have given it more stars if he hadn't put so much COVID into the book。 Not everyone thinks the same way and it was a total deterrent to the story for me。 。。。more

Detective Renee Ballard is still on the night shift, and prefers working alone。 The two cases she is working are: a retired gang member who has been ‘straight’ for years and 3 rapes by a duo of rapists working together。 The story is set in the middle of the pandemic with the Jan。 6 riots, and morale is low with her fellow officers。 Despite the main goal of the department being to preserve the social image of policemen, Renee’s primary goal is to solve cases, no matter what it takes。 Harry Bosch Detective Renee Ballard is still on the night shift, and prefers working alone。 The two cases she is working are: a retired gang member who has been ‘straight’ for years and 3 rapes by a duo of rapists working together。 The story is set in the middle of the pandemic with the Jan。 6 riots, and morale is low with her fellow officers。 Despite the main goal of the department being to preserve the social image of policemen, Renee’s primary goal is to solve cases, no matter what it takes。 Harry Bosch plays a role in helping。As an aside, did anyone else enjoy the Bosch TV series as much as we did? Almost more than the books? Titus Welliver plays the character so well! 。。。more

I really liked this mystery。 I enjoyed the characters and their roles in solving the murder。 The best part, and I didn't even realize this, was that the voice of Detective Bosch was the voice of the actual actor who plays Bosch in the tv crime show。 it was worth the read。 I really liked this mystery。 I enjoyed the characters and their roles in solving the murder。 The best part, and I didn't even realize this, was that the voice of Detective Bosch was the voice of the actual actor who plays Bosch in the tv crime show。 it was worth the read。 。。。more

Another Michael Connelly MasterpieceRead it。 You will absolutely love the book and the continued character development of Renée Ballard。 Can not wait for the next book。

4。5 stars。 The Renee Ballard books are some of the best in the Bosch series, this was another great read! I loved seeing Harry partner up with Renee in this one, hope to see more of them solving cases together in future books。

I think this is one of the best Connelly books I have read。 Mostly believable with a few kind of believables but was hard to put down。 I like Renee, she is one tough lady。

A new era, a new paradigm, and it works! Despite readers’ views of the pandemic and political correctness, this book is the best of Bosch and Ballard yet。 Looking forward to Desert Star。

Never disappointsCan’t think of a Bosch/Ballard book that didn’t exceed expectations。 Get the book, find some place comfortable and get lost in the story。 It’ll be time well spent,

Miss Amanda E Cummins

An excellent read。 Two unconnected crime scenarios intertwined with the unofficial partnership of Ballard and Bosch made for a read-in-one-go。 There are elements of plot and solving solutions which are perhaps far-fetched but, overall, I was gripped。

Tough single detective Renee Ballard loves to work the overnight shift in Hollywood, so you can imagine the types of characters she encounters。 While I enjoyed Renee's characterizations of her fellow police officers, I think the author--similar to Dirty Harry--believes cops are far too restrained by civil rights。 Tough single detective Renee Ballard loves to work the overnight shift in Hollywood, so you can imagine the types of characters she encounters。 While I enjoyed Renee's characterizations of her fellow police officers, I think the author--similar to Dirty Harry--believes cops are far too restrained by civil rights。 。。。more

Detective Renée Ballard and ex LAPD Harry Bosch team up once more as the workaholic Ballard takes on two cases that end up putting her in harm's way - the murder of an ex-gang member who bought himself out of the life years before, and a series of terrifying assaults committed by two men who break into single women's homes。 As is usual with Connelly's novels, this is a pacy and dramatic police procedural that bombs along with supreme efficiency。 Two things in particular deserve praise: although Detective Renée Ballard and ex LAPD Harry Bosch team up once more as the workaholic Ballard takes on two cases that end up putting her in harm's way - the murder of an ex-gang member who bought himself out of the life years before, and a series of terrifying assaults committed by two men who break into single women's homes。 As is usual with Connelly's novels, this is a pacy and dramatic police procedural that bombs along with supreme efficiency。 Two things in particular deserve praise: although Bosch is a mentor of sorts to Ballard, and always has her back, he's never her 'rescuer'。 Secondly, Connelly sidesteps the lazy and prurient way sexual assaults are normally dealt with in more exploitative crime novels。 By outlining the crimes, focusing on the victims and not relishing the acts in detail, Connelly portrays their impact, without the nasty voyeurism that many lesser authors fall back on。 。。。more

Another winner from Michael Connelly! Renée Ballard is proving to be a worthy successor to Harry Bosch。

It's a pretty good book to listen to。 I enjoy the two readers。 I also enjoyed the fact that it happened in LA because it's where I live so I can related more to the story。 The fact that it happened during COVID make the story more recent and real。 It gave an good overview about what is happening in LAPD, I just with the author had dived into it a little more。 It's a pretty good book to listen to。 I enjoy the two readers。 I also enjoyed the fact that it happened in LA because it's where I live so I can related more to the story。 The fact that it happened during COVID make the story more recent and real。 It gave an good overview about what is happening in LAPD, I just with the author had dived into it a little more。 。。。more

I'm impressed the Harry Bosch series is going this strong after so many books。 I really live the character of Renee Ballard and the prominent role she's taking on。 This book has two crimes she's solving and the stories are woven together well。 I'm impressed the Harry Bosch series is going this strong after so many books。 I really live the character of Renee Ballard and the prominent role she's taking on。 This book has two crimes she's solving and the stories are woven together well。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this。 Pandemic woven nicely into the background。 Dilemma of effective law enforcement in turbulent social times well handled。 And then an enjoyable plot with likeable characters。

Very first chapter: Masks, vax, (2) uniformed male cops portrayed as sexist and racist。 Connelly didn’t waste any time。 Neither did I in returning it to the library。

While not really a cliffhanger, I’m interested in whatever changes are coming for Ballard and Bosch。 I kind of figured out what was behind the Midnight Men, but I assumed the 2nd man that was let in each time would be the disgruntled ex as opposed to a partner to redhead。 I really wanted to see the exposure by FBI of those asshats who put their ex-girlfriends/wives through hell。 I cheered out loud when Bosch gu I’m glad I didn’t read this until a month before next book, DESERT STAR, is released! I usually really enjoy Michael Connelly but this one seemed to drag a little, there was too much tedious detail on Renee's routine and she is a bit smug while every other detective is seen as a moron。 It gets a little wearing。 I usually really enjoy Michael Connelly but this one seemed to drag a little, there was too much tedious detail on Renee's routine and she is a bit smug while every other detective is seen as a moron。 It gets a little wearing。 。。。more

Always loved this author’s books and his main detective Harry Bosch has long been a favourite。 Found the book to be fast paced and interesting to the end。 Brought up a lot of current issues: covid, BLM, the insurrection at the Capital。 I know many people disagree with including these in novels but the author is writing about the LAPD and has to keep it real。 I didn’t find the mentioning of these issues took away from the story nor distracted you from the plot。

3。5 stars would be more appropriate for this very interesting and somewhat complicated murder mystery。 I'm liking this series a lot。 Now that Bosch is getting pretty old, he can help Renee, but he can't chase bad guys anymore。 3。5 stars would be more appropriate for this very interesting and somewhat complicated murder mystery。 I'm liking this series a lot。 Now that Bosch is getting pretty old, he can help Renee, but he can't chase bad guys anymore。 。。。more
